Climate Sensitivity

Trading Term

Climate sensitivity is the amount of global average warming expected from a given increase in greenhouse gas concentrations, most commonly expressed as the equilibrium warming from a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide. It remains one of the larger sources of spread in long-range temperature estimates, since different lines of evidence and different model treatments of clouds and aerosols yield a substantial range. Views on climate sensitivity, combined with views on the emissions pathway, jointly determine the probability a participant would assign to crossing a given temperature threshold by a given date.
