Crop Yield

Trading Term

Crop yield is the mass of crop harvested per unit of farmed land, and it is the standard measure of agricultural productivity. Global average yields for corn, wheat, rice and soybeans, which together supply close to two thirds of human caloric intake, have risen steadily for decades as mechanization, synthetic fertilizer, pesticides, improved breeding and precision agriculture have outpaced any adverse climate effects. Because yields depend on the interaction between climate, technology, farmer behavior, geopolitics and trade rather than on climate alone, forward estimates draw on information dispersed across several fields.
