Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Effect

The carbon dioxide fertilization effect is the increase in plant photosynthesis and water use efficiency that accompanies higher atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. The benefit is uneven across crops, since C3 plants such as wheat, rice and soybeans respond substantially while C4 plants such as corn respond little except under drought conditions. It is one of three channels through which carbon dioxide driven climate change affects agriculture, alongside temperature change and altered water availability, and because these channels can work in opposite directions depending on crop and location, the net effect on a particular harvest is not uniformly negative.
