Shared Socioeconomic Pathway

Trading Term

A Shared Socioeconomic Pathway, abbreviated SSP, is a scenario describing a plausible trajectory for global population, economic growth, technology and policy, used as an input to climate model simulations. Common examples include SSP1-2.6, describing rapid technological progress and aggressive mitigation reaching net zero around 2070, SSP2-4.5, describing moderate growth and uneven policy with emissions peaking in the 2030s, and SSP5-8.5, describing fossil-fuel-intensive growth with minimal climate policy. Because the pathways embed assumptions about economics, demographics and geopolitics rather than physics alone, judgments about which is most plausible draw on information dispersed well beyond climate science.
