Coupled Model Intercomparison Project

Trading Term

The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, abbreviated CMIP and currently in its sixth phase as CMIP6, is the coordinated framework under which modeling centers worldwide run their global climate models on a common set of scenarios and experiments. Standardizing the inputs makes results comparable, so the spread across models can be read as one measure of structural uncertainty rather than as a byproduct of differing assumptions. CMIP output forms the basis of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments and of most quantitative statements about projected warming, sea level and ocean circulation change.
