Forced Response

Trading Term

The forced response is the portion of a climate signal attributable to an imposed driver such as rising greenhouse gas concentrations, as distinguished from the variability the system generates internally. It is usually estimated by averaging across many model simulations, on the reasoning that unforced fluctuations are uncorrelated between runs and average toward zero while the forced signal does not. The distinction matters for interpreting any single observed decade, since a short stretch running counter to the forced response is not by itself evidence against it, and it is also why projections of some quantities differ little across emissions scenarios over the next few decades.
