Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

Trading Term

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, abbreviated AMOC, is the large-scale Atlantic ocean circulation that carries warm surface water northward, releases heat to the atmosphere at high latitudes where the denser water sinks, and returns cold water southward at depth. It includes the Gulf Stream but is broader, encompassing the sinking regions and the deep return flow, so the two are not interchangeable. Its strength is measured in Sverdrups, each equal to one million cubic meters per second, and is monitored continuously at 26.5°N by the RAPID mooring array, which provides the observational series against which contracts on AMOC strength can be resolved.
