New to Interactive Brokers?

Backtesting options strategies has traditionally been a time-consuming process. Traders often needed access to historical data, specialized software and significant technical expertise to research strategy performance.

Today, tools such as the ORATS Backtester make this process far more accessible.

Available within Trader Workstation (TWS), the ORATS Backtester allows traders to explore thousands of historical options strategy variations without having to build their own backtesting models.

Whether researching covered calls, credit spreads, iron condors or other common strategies, traders can quickly analyze how different approaches have behaved historically.

Compare Options Strategy Outcomes

One of the biggest challenges in options trading is selecting from multiple viable strategies.

ORATS allows users to compare different approaches using historical data, helping them evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of various strategies before placing a trade.

Analyze Historical Performance Metrics

The platform provides access to a variety of performance measures that traders commonly review during strategy research.

Examples include:

  • Return
  • Return on risk
  • Win rate
  • Drawdown
  • Average trade results

These metrics can help traders move beyond opinions and evaluate strategies using objective data.

Review Different Expiration Periods

Expiration selection can have a major impact on strategy performance.

For example, a covered call using 7 days to expiration may behave differently than one using 45 days to expiration.

The ability to compare expiration periods can help traders better understand the trade-offs between premium collection, trade frequency and risk exposure.

Evaluate Multiple Market Environments

Markets are constantly changing.

Strategies that perform well in one environment may behave differently in another. Historical analysis allows traders to review performance across different periods rather than focusing solely on current conditions.

This can provide additional perspective when evaluating potential opportunities.

By making large-scale options research more accessible, tools such as the ORATS Backtester help traders spend less time gathering data and more time evaluating ideas. For traders interested in researching options strategies before risking capital, backtesting can provide valuable context and a more structured approach to decision-making.
