Stocks Look Upbeat As Big Tech Delivers And The Fed Holds

US futures ticked higher after strong earnings from Alphabet and Amazon, a steadier inflation read, and a Fed hold that still drew rare dissent — with Meta sliding on higher spending plans.

What’s going on here?

US stock futures nudged higher after strong earnings from Alphabet and Amazon, a slight cooling in inflation, and a Federal Reserve rate hold – even as Meta slid on plans to spend more.

What does this mean?

Markets are trying to balance two forces: company profits that still look healthy, and an economy that’s slowing just enough to keep the Fed cautious. Alphabet and Amazon beat expectations, showing that online ads and cloud spending haven’t cracked the way some feared, while Meta’s drop was a reminder that investors are less patient with big jumps in long-term spending. On the macro side, the Fed kept interest rates unchanged, but multiple officials reportedly disagreed, which signals more internal debate than usual. Meanwhile, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, core personal consumption expenditures, cooled slightly in March, while growth and jobs data suggested the economy is moderating, not rolling over.

Why should I care?

For markets: Megacaps can still swing the whole tape.

Moves in a handful of giant tech stocks are doing a lot of the index-level work. When results are strong, they can lift broad benchmarks even if other big names fall, which makes “earnings season” feel like a market referendum on just a few balance sheets. That also raises the stakes for any disappointment in areas like ad demand, cloud growth, or big investment plans.

Zooming out: Cooling inflation helps but the Fed story is getting messier.

Softer inflation readings make it easier for the Fed to eventually cut rates, but reported dissent inside the committee hints that the path won’t be smooth. If growth keeps cooling while the job market stays firm, policymakers could split between waiting for more proof on inflation and worrying about slowing activity. That uncertainty can keep markets sensitive to each new inflation and jobs update.
