Xbox Cloud Gaming coming to LG Smart TVs
“Game On” is The Fly’s weekly recap of the stories powering up or beating down video game stocks.
‘GTA VI’ EXPECTED TO BREAK RECORDS:
Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) is set to release “Grand Theft Auto VI” in the fall on PlayStation (SONY) and Xbox (MSFT) consoles, which is expected to be the biggest entertainment launch of 2025, the Financial Times’ Tim Bradshaw reported last week, citing analysts at DFC Intelligence. The game is likely to surpass $1B in pre-orders before it is even available and total revenues from its first 12 months after release are expected to reach $3.2B. The Fly notes that Take-Two’s “Grand Theft Auto V,” which first came out in September 2013, is the second-best selling video game of all time in terms of unit sales, behind “Minecraft.”
XBOX/LG:
On Monday, Microsoft announced a collaboration with LG Electronics to bring the Xbox app to their new LG Smart TVs later this year. This means Game Pass Ultimate members will be able to play their games directly from the Xbox app on supported LG Smart TVs via Xbox Cloud Gaming. “Soon, players with LG Smart TVs will be able to explore the Gaming Portal for direct access to hundreds of games in the Game Pass Ultimate catalog, including popular titles such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and upcoming releases like Avowed (launching February 18, 2025),” Microsoft said. “We also recently announced that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can stream select games they own, outside the Game Pass catalog. This feature will also be available on the Xbox app with LG Smart TVs, allowing Game Pass Ultimate members to stream over 50 games they own, including NBA 2K25, Hogwarts Legacy, and more.”
BOFA SEES STRONG Q4 FOR EA:
Noting the firm tracks monthly IAP revenues of 500-plus mobile games across five video game stocks on Sensor Tower for intra-quarter reads, BofA said Tuesday that after two consecutive years of year-over-year declines, the U.S. mobile gaming market has returned to growth. For Electronic Arts (EA), the firm is expecting strong Q4 on FC Mobile reacceleration. December mobile IAP revenue grew 12% month-over-month as FC Mobile picked up momentum, BofA highlights. In Q4, 3P estimates suggest +7% quarter-over-quarter, likely above Street expectations. The firm sees a possibility for actual Q4 bookings to exceed tracking due to 3P data’s exclusion of FC Mobile Webstore. Nevertheless, its FY25 Mobile forecast remains below management’s indication.
