Markets are buckling to start a busy week as geopolitical tensions lifted oil prices to an October high, raising inflation worries while quelling hopes of substantially lighter interest rates in the near term. Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia over the weekend paired with uncertainty concerning an energy ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow are presenting further headwinds to the landscape and together driving fuel charges north, as Ukraine claims that Russia is continuing to hurt its infrastructure. Treasurys are closed due to Columbus Day, however, the strengthening greenback, depreciating precious metals and surging crude signal tighter financial conditions consistent with heavier yields and weakening risk sentiment. But investors will have plenty of opportunities for a rebound in animal spirits in the coming sessions, as the beginning of earnings season coincides with some critical economic data, namely the CPI, PPI and retail sales, as well other lower profile publications like existing home transactions, unemployment filings, manufacturing production, etc. For now though, volatility protection instruments are seeing rising premiums in consideration of potential turbulence on the way, especially as the technology and semiconductor areas underperform against the backdrop of 10 of the 11 principal sectors advancing. The dynamic has the Nasdaq 100 and Russell 2000 indices sinking, the S&P 500 around its flatline while the Dow Jones Industrial posts strong gains. Elsewhere, commodities excluding gold and silver are climbing, prediction markets are experiencing engagement and cryptocurrencies are declining.
Does Wall Street Have Breathing Room?
Heavy yields resulting from mounting inflationary pressures predominantly attributed to energy are raising the bar for corporate earnings performances as the season kicks off tomorrow. Wall Street will first hear from the banks which will serve evidence on how consumers are doing, how M&A appetites look and the extent to which elevated levels of borrowing tied to the AI buildout are weighing on financing charges for the Treasury as well loan terms, credit costs and delinquency trends for households. That information is poised to provide signals on the health of the overall expansion, as broader progress reduces the risk of a slowdown in the tech sector that would generate a cyclical deceleration. Furthermore, results from ASML and Taiwan Semi on Wednesday and Thursday will help analysts and economists identify the capacity and demand for significantly more capital expenditures from here, as well as point to clues of the projected returns of the massive investments. With interest rates in the nosebleeds and expectations for profit growth in lofty territory as well, there’s not much space for disappointment, although a relaxation in geopolitical tensions would certainly offer equity and fixed-income bulls increased breathing room.
International Roundup
Mexican Manufacturing Strengthens
Mexican industrial production strengthened for the third consecutive month in August and to its best annualized increase in over 2 years. Indeed, the 0.6% and 3.5% month over month (m/m) and year over year (y/y) lifts were better than the 0% and 2.6% expected as well as the 0.5% and 2.7% from July. The manufacturing and construction sectors were standouts, growing 3.2% and 7.5% y/y, but mining declined 0.8% during the period. Following the economic contraction in the first quarter of 2026, prospects have improved in the later months and the nation’s cycle appears to be stable and healthy heading into year-end.
