What’s going on here?

Freight costs soared last week as US–China trade tensions flared up, sending the Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index up 6.9% – its biggest jump in months.

What does this mean?

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index – a key gauge of shipping costs for massive cargoes like iron ore, coal, and grain – closed Friday at 2,069, up nearly 7% for the week. Gains spread across all major vessel types: capesize rates jumped 11.5% to average $25,882 per day, while panamax and supramax vessels also booked solid increases. The spike comes after the US and China each slapped new port fees on incoming vessels, fueling both logistical headaches and higher costs for shippers. Trade analysts at Intermodal expect these back-and-forth measures to keep the global shipping scene volatile, making it tougher and pricier to move core raw materials worldwide.

Why should I care?

For markets: Shipping stocks ride a wave of tension.

Shipping firms are getting a boost from rising freight rates, helping lift their shares – at least for now. Investors are eyeing continued gains as ongoing friction supports the sector, though higher costs could squeeze profits for importers and exporters. Still, the picture isn’t all rosy: while shipping rates climb, sliding iron ore futures point to worries about global demand and potential oversupply down the line.

The bigger picture: Global supply chains stay on edge.

The latest tit-for-tat policies reflect more than a new round of fees – they reinforce just how deeply economic rivalry can jolt global trade. As US–China tensions simmer, supply chain volatility could become the new normal, rippling into costs for industries from manufacturing to agriculture and shifting the global flow of goods in unpredictable ways.
