RFK Jr. names eight members to vaccine panel
Catch up on the top industries and stocks that were impacted, or were predicted to be impacted, by the comments, actions and policies of President Donald Trump with this daily recap compiled by The Fly:
President Trump told reporters that he would send letters to trading partners in the next week or two setting unilateral tariff rates, Yahoo Finance reports. “At a certain point, we’re just going to send letters out. And I think you understand that, saying this is the deal, you can take it or leave it,” the president said at the Kennedy Center in Washington.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has appointed eight new members to the advisory immunization committee, including vaccine opponents, The Wall Street Journal’s Liz Essley Whyte and Dominique Mosbergen report. The new panel will review both new and existing vaccine recommendations. Kennedy’s move came two days after abruptly removing all 17 of the prior members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. “All of these individuals are committed to evidence-based medicine, gold-standard science, and common sense,” RFK Jr. said. Publicly traded companies in the pharmaceutical and vaccine space include Moderna (MRNA), Novavax (NVAX), BioNTech (BNTX), AstraZeneca (AZN), Bristol Myers (BMY), Eli Lilly (LLY), GSK (GSK), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Merck (MRK), Novartis (NVS), Pfizer (PFE), Roche (RHHBY) and Sanofi (SNY).
Roche (RHHBY) CEO Thomas Schinecker says that President Trump’s executive order seeking to tie U.S. drug prices to those abroad could impact future investment in America, The Wall Street Journal’s Jared S. Hopkins reports. The company has planned to invest $50B in the U.S. over the next five years, and when asked how the order, signed last month and opposed by the industry, could affect such plans, Schinecker said Roche would only say that the company was in discussions with the government. “These kinds of investments, you can only make if you can afford those investments. If you cut into that significantly, then the whole industry wouldn’t be able to invest these kinds of monies,” Schinecker said at the WSJ CEO Council.
Some supporters of President Donald Trump are calling for a boycott of Walmart (WMT) after the retailer’s heiress Christy Walton took out an ad in The New York Times promoting a nationwide protest movement against Trump, The Washington Post reports. The ad, run by the “No Kings” movement, calls on Americans to “mobilize” on Saturday — Flag Day and Trump’s birthday — in order to “reject authoritarianism.”
The Trump administration’s sweeping deportations of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally have made many Latinos fearful and many are retreating from public life, forgoing their regular shopping trips and restaurant meals, Laura Cooper, Arian Campo-Flores, and Enrique Perez de la Rosa of The Wall Street Journal reports. Across America, especially in Southern states with large Hispanic populations, consumer goods companies, restaurants, retailers, and more are taking a hit. Some companies impacted by this pullback in spending include Coca-Cola (KO), Colgate-Palmolive (CL), Constellation Brands (STZ), Boston Beer (SAM), and JD Sports (JDSPY).
Micron Technology (MU) and the Trump Administration announced Micron’s plans to expand its U.S. investments to approximately $150 billion in domestic memory manufacturing and $50 billion in R&D, creating an estimated 90,000 direct and indirect jobs. As part of today’s announcement, Micron plans to invest an additional $30 billion beyond prior plans which includes building a second leading-edge memory fab in Boise, Idaho; expanding and modernizing its existing manufacturing facility in Manassas, Virginia; and bringing advanced packaging capabilities to the U.S. to enable long-term growth in High Bandwidth Memory, which is essential to the AI market. Additionally, Micron is announcing a planned $50 billion domestic R&D investment, reaffirming its long-term position as the global memory technology leader. As previously announced, Micron’s investment includes its ongoing plans for a megafab in New York.
U.S. authorities are planning a partial evacuation of its embassy in Iraq and also allow families of military personnel in the Middle East to leave locations, Reuters reports, citing U.S. and Iraqi sources, who did not specify which security risks had prompted the decision. The report also notes that the White House has confirmed that President Trump was aware of the move. Publicly traded companies in the Energy space include BP (BP), Chevron (CVX), ConocoPhillips (COP), Exxon Mobil (XOM), Shell (SHEL) and TotalEnergies (TTE).
President Trump received a phone call from Tesla (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk late on Monday night, which led to a public expression of regret from Musk overnight for his social media posts, Jonathan Swan and Theodore Schleifer of New York Times report, citing three people briefed on the call. Musk’s call came after he spoke privately on Friday with Vice President JD Vance and the White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, about a path to a truce between the two men, two of the people told the Times.
