Wind Shear

Wind shear is the change in wind speed or direction with height in the atmosphere, and strong vertical shear tends to disrupt the organized structure a tropical cyclone requires to intensify. It is the main reason El Nino conditions suppress Atlantic hurricane activity, since the associated circulation changes increase shear over the basin. Shear also complicates the relationship between a warming climate and hurricane activity, because warmer oceans favor stronger storms while projected changes in shear and mid-level humidity work in the opposite direction, and the net effect is generally expected to be fewer storms overall with the stronger ones somewhat stronger.
