Moody’s HWind Wind Speeds

Trading Term

Moody’s HWind is a real-time analytical platform that provides detailed wind speed estimates and modeling for tropical cyclones. Originally developed as HWind by NOAA and now maintained by Moody’s RMS, it integrates satellite, aircraft, buoy, and radar data to produce high-resolution wind field maps. These maps are used to assess a storm’s intensity and potential impact, offering valuable input for insurers, reinsurers, and catastrophe modelers.

Unlike traditional hurricane scales that report broad categories, HWind data offers spatially precise, quantitative assessments of wind exposure, which can be overlaid with insured asset maps. This granularity enables underwriters and claims analysts to more accurately estimate potential losses or damage zones. HWind’s methodology has been validated through post-event assessments and is now a core part of catastrophe risk pricing and response.

Moody’s HWind products also support real-time decision-making for emergency management and public safety. During active storms, HWind reports are distributed to clients and response agencies to guide evacuation, resource deployment, and impact forecasts. Its integration into insurance-linked securities (ILS), such as catastrophe bonds with parametric triggers, has made HWind an increasingly important tool in both finance and disaster resilience planning.
