Accumulated Cyclone Energy

Trading Term

Accumulated Cyclone Energy, abbreviated ACE, is an index of overall tropical cyclone activity computed by summing the squares of maximum sustained wind speeds in knots at six-hourly intervals for all systems at tropical storm strength or above, then scaling the result. Because it combines frequency, intensity and duration in a single number, ACE is more informative about seasonal activity than storm counts alone, which treat a brief marginal tropical storm and a long-lived major hurricane identically. It is commonly used when examining whether long-term trends exist in basin-wide activity.
