HURDAT2

Trading Term

HURDAT2 is the revised Atlantic hurricane database maintained by the National Hurricane Center, containing six-hourly position and intensity records for Atlantic tropical cyclones extending back to 1851. It is the standard observational basis for estimating landfall frequencies, regional strike probabilities and long-term activity trends. Its practical limitation is sample size, since major hurricane landfalls in any single region are rare enough that even a century of records yields noisy estimates, with the observed count for a given stretch of coastline reflecting historical accident as much as underlying risk.
