Lesson 5 of 7
In this lesson you will learn about some of the global venues and products available with your IBKR TWS account. We will also explain how to set up data feeds and request trading permissions.
During the account opening process clients submit information about their financial status, investment and product knowledge and trading history.
During the account approval process trading permissions may already have been approved.
However, let’s assume that a client wants to start trading in a market other than his own native market or one that requires use of currencies other than the account base currency. If a client is not permissioned for trading Warrants, he won’t be able to submit a trade. And if users don’t have live market data, they might be attempting to trade off old prices, which in itself carries risks.
On screen you can see quotes for instruments representing shares in Barclays Bank as an example. The company trades on several exchanges such as the LSE or London Stock Exchange, and EBS in Switzerland. It also has ADRs listed in New York and trades under a separate ticker in US dollars.
Because these shares are traded elsewhere and are priced in British pounds and Swiss francs, some investors might want to trade these with a specific purpose in mind to reflect a potential view on the currency returns as well as those on the stock.
Let’s assume that when an investor opened his US dollar denominated account, he only expected to trade US stocks. After becoming more interested in fixed income and currency markets, he decides that he’d like to invest overseas. If he loads the same tickers displayed on screen he might run in to two issues. One, if he attempts to submit a trade he will get an error message including information on how to apply for the appropriate trade permission. Two, he probably won’t see live market data. Note that
next to these prices is a small yellow triangle. If I hover above it you can see a warning about this being delayed data.
To request additional trading permissions or to subscribe to additional market data go to Account Management and make those changes.
Here are a few items to remember.
Trading permissions are generally granted by asset class.
For additional information on restrictions impacted by factors such as residency, check the footnotes on the Product Listings page of the IBKR website.
You may access Account Management via any page on the IBKR website. When successfully logged in, click on the Settings menu to the left. Here you will see existing Profile, Financial Information and Trading Permissions. In the upper right of each window is a configuration icon.
You can see what regional permissions I have for any specific asset class below. The display can be changed from Stocks to Bonds, for example, by clicking on the central dropdown menu and selecting another Asset class.
If I select Stocks, I can review the countries where I currently have permissions. These are displayed in Blue Font with a check next to the country. For the earlier example, I wanted to trade in the UK and Switzerland. Select by clicking the box displayed. If you don’t see the country where you wish to trade, access the All Regions dropdown box and locate those countries.
Next, I will change the asset selection menu to Cash Forex. Now the display has a box for Global. Click
here to select and you can click Continue to the lower right to submit changes for both Stocks and Forex.
Follow the on-screen instructions to submit your trading permission request.
Now let’s look at Market Data.
The on-screen display allows users to choose a geographic area and then review data feeds by Quote Bundles, Levels I and II, Indexes, Fixed income and Other. Click the Information icon to the right of any line to see detailed descriptions for each subscription. Check the required boxes to the left of the data feed you want and scroll to the bottom of the page and click the blue Continue button. Market data is activated in real-time.
If you know the product and exchange you want data from, but don’t know which feed, consider using the Market Data Assistant under the Support menu on the left. Click the Market Data Assistant button. On the next screen, complete as much information as you can. For example, I would like to know the potential cost of subscribing to a feed containing a quote for shares of Barclays Bank on the London Stock Exchange, but as a Non-Professional investor.
Enter the Ticker. When I start to enter LSE in to the Exchange input field, the picker returns available exchanges for selection. On the Optional Filters line click the Choose type dropdown. Here I can select Non-Pro. Under the Asset selector I will refine my choice to stocks and hit the Search button.
On the Search results display below, confirm that you entered the correct ticker symbol information and review the details and associated fees. The Market Data Assistant informs users of a choice of available market data. If you want to subscribe to a specific feed, remember to access User Settings from the Settings menu on the left of the page.
For specific platform feedback and suggestions, please submit it directly to our team using these instructions.

I have an IBKR account and trade US options for many years.

Hello Peter, thank you for reaching out. Due to regulatory restrictions, it is not possible to trade European options as a US resident at IBKR. Please reach back out with any additional questions. We are here to help!

Hi, I am a Netherlands resident and opened an account in IBIE. I transferred USD shares of a company listed in NYSE from my employer’s brokerage account in the US. Can you please clarify if I will be eligible for SIPC protection of $500K or Ireland based protection of 20K? How can I figure out the depository of my positions being IBKR LLC or not?

Hello Interactive Brokers, Is it possible for me as an US citizen to open an IB account to simply do Roth conversions from a Traditional IRA to a Roth IRA? The funds would stay with the same broad ETF positions, just move from traditional to Roth, creating a taxable event. I am planning whether to move overseas in a couple years and I don’t want to lose my brokerage, as an American who may be an EU resident (Lithuania or France). Is this possible?
Thank you for reaching out. Yes, it is possible to convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA at IBKR. Please view this FAQ for instructions to convert: https://www.interactivebrokers.com/faq?id=28225656
If you relocate to a different country, you will be able to retain your account as long as you are not moving to a country that IBKR is prohibited from transacting business in due to government sanctions.
However, even if relocating to a permissible country, you may be required to initiate a new application and request a manual transfer of eligible assets once your new application has been approved. Whether this step will be required depends upon the country you were residing in and the one that you are moving to as IBKR maintains multiple entities each of which has been formed to carry client accounts based upon local regulatory requirements and IBKR policies. You would need to contact your local Client Service Center to determine if your particular situation requires opening a new account.

Hello IBKR, I am non US Resident with a USD account and want to buy stocks in EUR. How can I do it? Thanks
Hello, thank you for asking. Cash accounts must maintain a positive balance. In order to trade a foreign security, you must deposit or convert funds to the desired security’s currency, and the trade can be placed once the funds settle. For instance, if you carry Euros in your account and want to trade a stock on an American stock exchange, you will need settled USD funds. Please note that forex settlement generally takes place one business day following the sale transaction (Trade Date plus one business day: T+1). Margin accounts allow you to trade without waiting for cash to settle or converting currencies. However, it is required that you meet the margin requirement in your account. Failure to meet these requirements will result in becoming subject to liquidation of assets to bring the account back into margin compliance.
You must request trading permissions to trade specific products and in specific regions. IBKR grants permissions based on your financial profile (e.g. age, liquid net worth, investment objectives, product knowledge and prior trading experience) and sometimes where you are located. Please note that we cannot disclose the requirements needed for specific trading permissions.
You can easily view and manage your trading permissions any time in Client Portal:

I am going to china for a few weeks during my staying in China, can I access to IBKR for trading and if i do, how to do it. thanks
Thank you for reaching out. As long as you are not traveling to a country which IBKR is prohibited from conducting business within due to U.S. government restrictions, you should be able to access your account and trade. You may, however, wish to check and make sure you have not enabled any IP Address restrictions that limit your trading platform access to a list of IP addresses you’ve previously designated.
Use the button above or follow the below procedure to configure IP Restrictions within Client Portal:
Log into Client Portal.
Click the User menu (head and shoulders icon in the top right corner) followed by Settings.
Then under User Settings section find Security.
Click IP Restrictions and follow the prompts on the screen.

If I want to purchase a non-US equity security, for instance on the LSE in the UK, is there a way to have IBKR handle the FX portion of the trade automatically, without me having to execute a USD/GBP trade to cover the purchase? If so I’d like to enable that in my configuration settings.
Thank you for reaching out. No, this is not possible. IBKR does not automatically convert currencies. In a Cash account, you must deposit or convert funds to the desired security’s currency, and the trade can be placed once the funds settle.
Margin accounts allow you to trade without converting currencies or waiting for cash to settle. Please note that if you do not convert the currency, you will have a negative cash balance in that currency. It is required that you meet the margin requirement in your account. Failure to meet these requirements will result in becoming subject to liquidation of assets to bring the account back into margin compliance.
Hey, can i trade in UCITs ETFs with IB India account using INR as my base currency?
Hello, thank you for reaching out. Based on the official language(s) of the country where you reside, there is not a Key Information Document (KID) available for the product you are interested in trading. That means you {can/cannot trade} the product, according to the Packaged Retail and Insurance-based Investment Products Regulation – EU No 1286/2014. IBKR is required to block trading in a PRIIP if a KID is not available.
In the future, you can see which products have KIDs in Client Portal: https://ndcdyn.interactivebrokers.com/sso/Login?action=CS_PRIIPS
Hello IBKR, I’ve have had an account in the US for a few years now, and trade on my TWS (when at home), and on my iPhone App when out and about. Having said that, I’m going to be going to Lisbon, Dublin and Edinburgh for 2 weeks, at the beginning of next year, and want to be able to see my accounts, real-time data, and (if need be), be able to execute orders while in those cities/countries. Is there anything I need to do, or any switches I need to flip to be able to trade from my iPhone (as I do here in the U.S.), while I’m vacationing overseas/
Hi Justin, thank you for reaching out. As long as you are not traveling to a country which IBKR is prohibited from conducting business within due to U.S. government restrictions, you should be able to access your account and trade. I am a US Citizen that has Hong Kong Stock in physical certificates. Can I transfer the Hong Kong stocks to hold in my IB account based in the US?
Hello Carl, thank you for reaching out. IBKR does not accept deposits of physical stock certificates except for Hong Kong stocks. For all stocks except Hong Kong stocks, you are required to convert any physical certificates into an electronic form before they can be transferred to your IBKR account. We recommend that you contact the transfer agent appointed by the issuing corporation for assistance with this conversion process.
IBKR supports physical stock certificate deposits for stocks trading on HKEX. For more information, please see the IBKR Knowledge Base: https://www.ibkrguides.com/kb/article-4077.htm
Hello I am a Spanish resident and would like to operate on US ETFs and Stocks. Can I do it?
Hello Andres, thank you for your inquiry. Issuers of U.S. listed ETFs do not as a rule create Key Information Documents (KIDs). This means that EEA and UK Retail clients cannot purchase the product, according to the Packaged Retail and Insurance-based Investment Products Regulation – EU No 1286/2014. IBKR is required to block trading in a PRIIP if a KID is not available.
Clients nevertheless have several options:
1. Many US ETF issuers have equivalent ETFs issued by their European entities. European-issued ETFs have KIDs and are therefore freely tradable.
2. Clients can trade most large US ETFs as CFDs. The CFDs are issued by IBKRs European entities and as such meet all KID requirements.
3. Clients may be eligible for re-classification as a professional client, for whom KIDs are not required.

Ich bekam aber eine Mail mit einem Video, wie ich diesen Depotübertrag bewerkstelligen solle, da die Aktie in einer anderen Währung als meiner Heimatwährung vorliegt. Hello IBKR, I registered in US and am thinking about going to China for some time. Do I need to adjust my account for trading purpose? What about the tax? If I have capital gains in China, do I pay tax to US?
Hello Jojo, thank you for reaching out.
Hello IBKR, I am an EU based IBKR user. If I sell a Put for an US based ETF, and the Put gets assigned, will I be given the shares of the ETF, even if a KID is not available? Or will the assignment be solved by cash? Thank you for your attention!
Hello, thank you for asking. If the U.S. ETF has a Key Information Document (KID), and you sell a put option that gets assigned, you will receive the ETF shares as expected. The assignment proceeds normally, and the ETF is delivered into your account. However, if the ETF does not have a KID, IBKR is unable to deliver the shares due to PRIIPs regulation, which restricts the sale of certain investment products to EU retail investors. In this case, the assignment will be cash-settled. You will pay the strike price, but you won’t receive the ETF shares. Instead, the position is closed out in cash, and you may see a realized profit or loss based on the difference between the strike price and the market price at the time of assignment. We hope this helps answer your question!

Hello, I opened an account in Belgium. Is it possible to trade options in the NYSE? Thanks
Hi, thank you for reaching out. To trade certain products or in specific regions, you’ll need to request permissions. These are based on your financial profile (e.g., age, experience, net worth, objectives) and sometimes your location. Please note we can’t share the exact requirements for each permission. https://spr.ly/IBKR_TradingPermissions

Hi,
I lived in Australia before and used my Australian bank account to invest in US stocks through IBKR. However, I have gone back to my home country – Vietnam and live here for the rest of my life. I have two questions
1. Can I continue use my Australian bank account to invest US stocks through IBKR when living in Vietnam?
2. If not, how can I transfer the funds to my IBKR account from my Vietnamese bank account?
Thank you.
Lakshman I’m yet to open an account and have a question with regards to the following scenario: I’m British and I currently live in the UK but I used to live and work in Zurich years ago and as a result my funds will originate from my Swiss based UBS account prior to it’s closure. All initial deposit(s) will be denominated in CHF. The question I have is: 1) What should I select for the base currency when I create my account? 2) I do not intend to start trading immediately bearing in mind current market conditions but will jump in as opportunities rise and will convert the CHF to the required currency as and when needed. 3) I may use WISE for the CHF-GBP/USD currency conversion 4) Any withdrawals will most likely be in GBP into my UK based CHASE current account.
I an UK resident and want to open IBkR ISA in UK! Wht happens to this account if I move to India? Will I be able to hold my funds as it is if move abroad? And also want to open GIA to buy Ireland domiciled US ETFS! Which account need to open? Margin or cash? And it will be universal account?
Hello, If I hold a US domiciled ETF (e.g. DFAW, VGK, VT) in a the IKBR US entity, and then move to Spain and subsequently request to transfer these ETFs to the IKBR EU entity, can they be transferred? Will they be liquidated? Can the positions be closed at a later point in time? Thank you.
