Getting Ready for Retirement

Lesson 1 of 5
Duration 2:22
Close Navigation

Retirement happens when an individual decides to stop working. For most people born after 1960 in the United States, the current retirement age is 67. That means no more commuting to the office, no more office meetings and no more lunches delivered to the workplace.

While the prospect of retirement may sound appealing to you, there are many factors to consider. And to be fair, you should be looking at possible retirement years, if not decades, in advance if you want to retire and maintain a similar lifestyle to that of your working years.

Retirement means that you no longer receive your regular company paychecks and no annual bonuses. You won’t see that biweekly direct deposit to your bank account. It means no more paid vacation time. And it means no more employer match to a 401k pension plan.

For most people, the employer’s healthcare plan also terminates, which means that you will need to start thinking about what happens when you get sick, and moreover, who pays the bill. Finally, as you get further into retirement health concerns may well increase, and you (or your family) may need to consider how to pay for long-term medical care and a retirement home.

There’s a lot to unpack in many of the above statements. And for many of us, the fact that we’re get older is an unwelcome reality, while the prospect of needing to get financially prepared maybe extremely daunting.

The purpose of this course is to unravel some of the challenges and to provide both explanations and direction. On our website users will find a retirement calculator designed to allow you to quantify your potential future needs, based upon your own inputs to crucial questions. While this, or any other online retirement calculator, won’t solve any financial shortfalls you may discover, it could be the first step you take in becoming better prepared for retirement.
