Ferrari’s First-Ever EV Is Getting Toasted

The all-electric car was meant to dazzle, but instead it’s getting roasted as a “luxury toaster”.

What’s going on here?

Ferrari’s first-ever fully electric vehicle isn’t exactly getting the reception the Italian carmaker would’ve hoped for, with the internet calling it… a luxury toaster.

What does this mean?

The new Luce’s performance specs are pure Ferrari: clocking in at 1,035 horsepower, the EV can reach 62 miles an hour in 2.5 seconds. The carmaker even consulted with NASA to make sure that the acceleration wasn’t too quick. And with a price tag of $640,000, Ferrari isn’t sacrificing exclusivity to boost sales.

🔻 But when the carmaker unveiled the Luce on Monday, online critics roasted its design. And on Tuesday, investors sent Ferrari’s stock down 8% – extending a slide that’s seen it fall about 33% over the past year.

Why should I care?

Zooming in: Not quite an instant classic.

With the Luce, Ferrari’s courting a new generation of buyers. But while they might look past its polarizing exterior, investors and collectors alike have questions about where a pure EV will park in Ferrari’s heritage stable.

▶ See, while most vehicles start depreciating the minute you drive them off the lot, some of Ferrari’s covetable and relatively scarce cars can actually increase in value over time.

▶ The Luce might struggle to reach that elite status – especially given doubts around the lifespan of its battery.

The bigger picture: Backing out.

Global automakers have suffered some spectacular losses trying to crack the EV market. Last year, Ford took a $19.5 billion hit and axed several EV models. And this year, Honda posted its first loss since 1957, after spending nearly $10 billion restructuring its flagging EV business.

▶ Both losses came after the US rolled back EV tax credits and loosened emissions rules, making it easier – and more profitable – to sell gas-powered vehicles. Meanwhile, Chinese firms dominate EV markets outside the US, with companies like BYD selling theirs at ultra-low prices. Altogether, that’s had automakers shifting their EV plans into reverse.
