US Factory Gauge Softened In September, Still In Expansion

The ISM index edged down to 54.5 from 54.6, with prices rising even as production and inventories cooled.

What’s going on here?

US factory activity cooled a touch in September: the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index dipped to 54.5 from 54.6, missing forecasts for 55.0 but still signaling expansion.

What does this mean?

An ISM reading above 50 means the manufacturing sector is growing, so this report still points to a steady backdrop even if the top-line number barely moved. Under the hood, production and inventories eased, while new orders and employment ticked up, suggesting demand is holding up but factories aren’t ramping output as quickly. The wrinkle is prices: the survey’s prices-paid component rose even as activity cooled, which can look like firms are facing higher input costs without getting much extra volume. That mix tends to matter beyond industrial stocks, because it can influence how investors think about inflation and, by extension, how soon the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates.

Why should I care?

For markets: ISM’s 54.5 kept expansion intact, but rising prices changed the read-through.

A “still growing” headline can be supportive for manufacturing-linked companies, but markets often focus on the prices signal when it moves the other way from output. If investors read higher prices as stickier goods inflation, they may pencil in fewer or later Fed rate cuts than they hoped. That usually shows up first in interest-rate markets: shorter-term US Treasury yields can drift up as traders reprice the expected path of policy rates, which also lifts the discount rates used to value stocks. And if input costs rise faster than sales volumes, the upside for corporate profits depends on pricing power: companies that can pass costs on tend to hold margins up better than those that can’t.
