The Claude maker has set up a Bay Area lab for real-world experiments and lab automation as it expands life-science work beyond computer-only research.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, has set up a wet lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, moving its life-science work from computer simulations into real-world biology, Reuters reports.
A wet lab is where ideas get tested with actual cells, chemicals, and lab equipment, not just on a computer. Anthropic’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, told Reuters that “the final test” for biology work will still be real experiments for a while, which is why the firm wants some work in-house and some handled by outside partners. It’s also exploring lab automation, including using Claude to direct robotic units with limited human intervention, while keeping human oversight for safety. The move extends its life-sciences push, from a Claude Science offering to an August “Model Hardware Standard” meant to help AI systems operate lab equipment, alongside collaborations with drugmakers like Genentech (Roche’s biotech unit), Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk. But it also highlights a hard constraint: even if AI helps find a promising molecule faster, turning that into an approved medicine still requires years of human testing to prove it’s safe and works.

Anthropic’s wet lab is a meaningful shift from “we can predict it” to “we can verify it,” which could speed up preclinical work, like refining molecules and lab protocols through rapid, repeatable experiments. Still, Anthropic says the facility isn’t for drug discovery specifically and that it’s not running clinical trials for now, so the longest bottleneck remains untouched. Reuters notes Alphabet’s Isomorphic Labs, which has worked for years to reach patients, delayed its goal to get to the clinic to the end of 2026. That’s the better benchmark than software-style release cycles: near-term progress is more likely to show up as faster preclinical iteration and better automation tools, not a quick march to patient-ready drugs.
