Population-Weighted Degree Days

Trading Term

Population-weighted degree days aggregate heating or cooling degree days across a region by weighting each location according to the population living there, rather than treating all geography equally. This matters because energy demand follows people, so an unweighted average across a large and sparsely populated area misrepresents the load the system will actually see. National figures on this basis run to roughly 4,300 heating degree days and 1,500 cooling degree days per year in the United States, and these weighted totals are what utility planning, national energy consumption statistics and weather-linked revenue analysis are generally built on.
