Automated Surface Observing System

Trading Term

The Automated Surface Observing System, abbreviated ASOS, is the network of automated weather stations operated by the National Weather Service, the FAA and the Department of Defense, most of which are sited at airports. The temperature sensor samples roughly every ten seconds, those samples are averaged into one-minute values, and a five-minute moving average is then computed, so a reported daily extreme must persist rather than reflect a momentary spike. ASOS stations are the observational basis for settlement in daily temperature markets, which makes their exact siting relevant, since land cover, shade, and proximity to water or urban development can shift readings by several degrees within a single metropolitan area.
