METAR

Trading Term

METAR, short for Meteorological Aerodrome Report, is the standardized hourly surface weather observation issued primarily for aviation, typically transmitted near 52 minutes past each hour. Temperature is encoded to the nearest tenth of a degree Celsius, equivalent to about 0.18°F, and is converted and rounded when reported in Fahrenheit. Because METAR sampling is hourly rather than continuous, the highest hourly METAR reading for a day can be lower than the official daily maximum when the peak occurs between reports, which is a common source of apparent discrepancy between data sources used by market participants.
