Growth has been recorded across multiple products, with weekly options contracts standing out as a key driver.

The Brazilian options market operated by B3, Brazil’s stock exchange, has reached record trading levels in 2026, posting significant growth in both traded volumes and open interest. According to exchange data updated through October 9, the average daily traded value (ADTV) for equity, ETF, BDR, and index options reached approximately R$ 1.4 billion this year, representing a 79% increase compared with the R$ 781 million recorded at the end of 2025. In 2024, average daily volume stood at R$ 705 million.

Widely used for portfolio protection and strategy construction across different market scenarios, options provide investors with greater flexibility to hedge positions and implement a broad range of trading approaches. The variety of underlying assets and expiration dates available further expands the range of possible strategies.

Growth has been observed across several segments of the options market, particularly among weekly options contracts. Average daily volume in weekly options on equities, ETFs, and BDRs more than doubled compared with the previous year, increasing from R$ 50 million in 2025 to R$ 106 million in 2026. In 2024, ADTV was just R$19 million, highlighting the rapid expansion of this segment over the past two years.

Monthly options on equities, ETFs, and BDRs also posted substantial growth. Average daily trading volume increased from R$ 539 million in 2024 to R$ 637 million in 2025, reaching R $992 million in 2026, an increase of approximately 56% year-over-year. Meanwhile, index options, including monthly, weekly, and daily expirations, generated an average daily trading volume of R$ 273 million in 2026, compared with R$ 94 million in 2025 and R$ 147 million in 2024.

Beyond the increase in trading activity, market participation has also expanded significantly. On October 9, 2026, total open interest reached 8.5 billion contracts, compared with 5.8 billion contracts at the end of 2025 and 4.3 billion contracts in December 2024.

Average daily open interest also reached a historic high in 2026, climbing to 7.1 billion contracts, versus 5.6 billion in 2025 and 5.4 billion in 2024. This represents growth of approximately 27% year-over-year, reinforcing the increasing use of options products by investors.

Trading Records Define 2026

The market’s growth has been accompanied by a series of historic milestones throughout 2026. In October, monthly and weekly options on equities, ETFs, and BDRs generated R$ 2.96 billion in trading volume during a single session, establishing a new all-time record and surpassing the previous record of R$ 2.7 billion set in February. In addition, seven other trading sessions during the year exceeded the R$ 2 billion threshold, a level never previously achieved.

Among monthly options on equities, ETFs, and BDRs, a new record was also set this month, when trading volume reached R$ 2.77 billion in a single day, exceeding the R$ 2.4 billion recorded in March.

Weekly options likewise achieved unprecedented levels in 2026. In June, trading volume reached R$ 1.08 billion, setting a new daily record for the category. Weekly-option trading had already surpassed R$ 1 billion in February, demonstrating that weekly expirations now offer liquidity levels comparable to those seen in monthly options contracts.

The expansion continued into October. Through October 9, monthly and weekly options on equities, ETFs, and BDRs registered an average daily trading volume of R$ 1.8 billion, the highest monthly ADTV ever recorded for the category, surpassing both March (R$ 1.4 billion) and February (R$ 1.3 billion).

How Does the Options Market Work?

Options are derivative financial instruments that grant investors the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a specific asset at a predetermined price, known as the strike price, under the conditions and within the time frame specified in the contract.

In practice, options can be used in a variety of strategies, ranging from portfolio protection against price fluctuations (hedging) to directional trades seeking to profit from rising or falling markets. To acquire an option, the buyer pays a premium, while the seller receives that premium and assumes the obligations associated with the contract.

At B3, investors can access options on a variety of underlying assets, including equities, ETFs, BDRs, and stock indices, with monthly, weekly, and, for certain indices, daily expiration alternatives. This diversity allows market participants to tailor exposures and time horizons according to their investment objectives and strategies.

The expansion of weekly options, in particular, provides additional opportunities for shorter-term trading strategies, while monthly expirations remain important instruments for positioning, portfolio management, and risk-control purposes.

As with other derivatives, options trading requires a solid understanding of contract mechanics and the risks involved. Although the buyer of a traditional option generally has downside risk limited to the premium paid, option writers can face substantially greater risks depending on the structure of the trade. Investors should therefore carefully evaluate their objectives, costs, risk tolerance, and product suitability before trading.
