Xbox unveils new “Gears of War” while Ubisoft shows more “Star Wars” during Summer Game Fest

NEW RELEASES:
This week's most notable release is Sega's (SGAMY) role-playing game “Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance,” an enhanced version of 2022's “SMT V.” The game releases June 14 for Nintendo Switch (NTDOY), PlayStation 4 (SONY), PS5, PC, Xbox One (MSFT), and Xbox Series X/S.
SUMMER GAME FEST:
This year's Summer Game Fest festivities began late last week, when The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley went on stage to present a number of major new trailers and announcements for upcoming video games from some of the industry's biggest players. Opening the show was Sony and LEGO jointly announcing “LEGO Horizon Adventures,” a game based on Sony's “Horizon Zero Dawn” franchise. The game will release holiday 2024 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, making it the first Sony-published game outside of “MLB The Show” to appear on the Nintendo console. Later, there was a reveal trailer for Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions,” which releases September 3, 2024 for PC and consoles, with Warner Bros.' VR game “Batman: Arkham Shadow” also getting a new trailer. The VR “Batman” game will release later in 2024 exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 (META).
Meanwhile, one of the biggest new game announcements from the show was for Take-Two's (TTWO) “Sid Meier's Civilization VII,” which will release in 2025 for PC and consoles. Other games receiving update trailers and new information were Sega's “Metaphor: ReFantazio,” “Sonix X Shadow Generations,” Bandai Namco's (NCBDY) “Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero,” and SNK's new “Fatal Fury” game.
XBOX SHOWCASE:
On Sunday, Microsoft hosted its annual Xbox Games Showcase, during which it unveiled new Xbox Series X and S consoles coming out holiday 2024, including a new all-digital Series X. On the software side, Xbox began the show with a new trailer for “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6,” the first new “Call of Duty” title since Microsoft closed on its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The game, which also received a roughly 40-minute deep dive after the Xbox Games Showcase, will release October 25 on PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and will launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Meanwhile, the Xbox maker spent most of the showcase highlighting upcoming titles published by Microsoft-owned developers, including id Software's “DOOM: The Dark Ages,” which will release in 2025 for PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox Series X/S and PC; Undead Labs' zombie survival game “State of Decay 3,” which did not get an official release window; Bethesda Softworks' “Starfield: Shattered Space,” which launches later in 2024; Compulsion Games' third-person action game “South of Midnight,” which will come out in 2025; Blizzard's “World of Warcraft: The War Within,” which launches August 26, 2024; The Initiative's “Perfect Dark,” a reboot of the 1999 Nintendo 64 title of the same name; and MachineGames' “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” which will release in 2024. The company closed the showcase with an announcement trailer for The Coalition's “Gears of War: E-Day,” which will be a prequel to the first “Gears of War” game. The “E-Day” trailer did not reveal a release window for the game.
In terms of third-party support, Microsoft unveiled a new trailer for Electronic Arts' (EA) upcoming role-playing game “Dragon Age: The Veilguard,” which will release later in 2024. Additionally, Konami's (KONMY) “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater,” a remake of 2004's “Metal Gear Solid 3,” had its first ever gameplay trailer at the showcase, though there was no release date announced. Other third-party games showcased during the event were Square Enix's (SQNXF) “Life is Strange: Double Exposure” and Ubisoft's (UBSFY) “Assassin's Creed Shadows,” both out this fall.
UBISOFT FORWARD:
Ubisoft also hosted its own Ubisoft Forward event this week, during which it focused more on providing additional gameplay and story footage of previously-announced titles. The event began with a deep dive into “Star Wars: Outlaws,” which will release on August 30, 2024, and ended with a similar in-depth look at “Assassin's Creed Shadows,” which launches November 15, 2024. Meanwhile, the company provided updates on new content coming to “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown,” which released earlier this year, and “The Rogue Prince of Persia,” which is currently in Early Access on Steam. In addition, Ubisoft confirmed that it is still working on a remake of “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” though only through a teaser trailer that said players should expect the game in 2026.
