What’s going on here?

On Monday, Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president of the US, and early policy changes could have far-reaching impacts.

What does this mean?

The US is gearing up for a shift in both domestic and international policies. On the immigration front, new executive orders may tighten the asylum system and ramp up deportations, potentially declaring a border emergency and revisiting Title 42 measures.

Trade relationships, particularly with China, might experience tension as there’s speculation around the reinstatement of previous tariffs and possible Section 301 investigations targeting key partners like Mexico, Canada, and the EU.

Additionally, Trump’s administration might renew deregulation efforts in the energy sector, potentially revoking Biden’s restrictions on LNG terminals and expanding oil and gas activities on federal lands.

Why should I care?

For markets: Trade tensions on the rise.

Restored tariffs on China and potential trade investigations could stir uncertainty in global markets. Investors might see volatility as sectors reliant on cross-border trade experience shake-ups. Manufacturing and export-heavy industries could face pressures, prompting shifts in supply chain strategies and potential price hikes.

The bigger picture: Economic winds of change.

Trump’s policies could lead to significant changes in US and global economies. Stricter immigration measures may affect labor markets and migration trends, with projections from abrdn hinting at long-term impacts on net migration figures. Meanwhile, shifts in energy policy might alter the US’s environmental commitments and pivot toward increased fossil fuel production, affecting both domestic energy prices and international climate agreements.
