Aerosol Forcing

Trading Term

Aerosol forcing is the effect of small airborne particles, particularly sulfates from fossil fuel combustion and from volcanic eruptions, on the Earth’s energy balance. Most such particles reflect sunlight and seed brighter clouds, producing a cooling influence that has partially masked greenhouse gas warming. Because aerosols wash out of the atmosphere within days to weeks while carbon dioxide persists for centuries, reductions in air pollution unmask warming relatively quickly, and changes in aerosol loading over the Atlantic are one candidate explanation for observed shifts in hurricane activity that is distinct from greenhouse gas warming.
