Nvidia’s Earnings Came In Higher Than Expected – And Investors Cheered

The world’s biggest company is still growing like a startup – and posted better-than-expected profit and sales at its earnings reveal on Wednesday.

What’s going on here?

Nvidia – the AI spending spree’s biggest winner so far – posted record quarterly sales and profit, beating estimates again.

What does this mean?

Valued at $5.1 trillion, Nvidia is the world’s biggest company – and getting bigger. On Wednesday, the chipmaker reported $96 billion in quarterly sales, up 106% from the same period a year ago. Profit also more than doubled to $54 billion, solidly higher than the $51 billion projected.

▶ That’s wild growth for a company Nvidia’s size, but the AI data center build-out is being really good to it: the firm’s $108 billion revenue forecast for this quarter was higher than analysts expected. Nvidia expects revenue to surge 70% next year.

🔺 Not surprisingly, the stock initially jumped 4% in after-hours trading.

Why should I care?

Zooming in: AI engine still revving.

Nvidia’s annual sales rocketed from $27 billion in 2022 to $215 billion last year, fueled by AI-hungry customers. It’s got more room to run: about half of all AI data center spending ends up in Nvidia’s till – and with that figure expected to top $1 trillion next year, analysts expect its profit to reach $313 billion.

Zooming out: Cheap for a reason.

Nvidia’s currently trading at 16 times what analysts think the company will make next year – a cheaper valuation than it’s seen for a while. Some see that as an opportunity, but there’s a catch…

▶ Alongside partnering with Wall Street banks to help its customers fund their AI infrastructure, the chipmaker-turned-financier is spending up to $105 billion backing a data center leased by OpenAI. And it’s committed billions to AnthropicCoreWeaveIntelMarvellNebiusIrenPoolside… a long list of its own customers.

⚠️ Investors worry that Nvidia handing its customers the money to buy its products is artificially boosting demand. And the firms lending to Nvidia worry that if the AI boom cools, the companies it’s bankrolling could struggle – hurting the chipmaker and potentially hurting them too.
