Tonnes (Metric Tons)

Trading Term

A tonne, or metric ton, is a unit of mass equal to 1,000 kilograms or approximately 2,204.62 pounds. It is the standard unit of measurement for bulk commodities in most countries outside the United States. Commonly used in international trading of coal, wheat, soybeans, metals, and chemicals, it provides a consistent benchmark for volume and pricing in global contracts.

Commodity exchanges and trade contracts often use metric tons to facilitate standardized settlement and reporting. For instance, the London Metal Exchange (LME) lists base metal prices per tonne. Understanding this unit is essential for comparing market data, negotiating shipping and storage rates, and calculating export and import volumes.
