Owner Earnings

Trading Term

Owner earnings estimate the cash a company can distribute without weakening its operations or competitive position. The calculation commonly adjusts net income for noncash charges, working capital, and required capital expenditures.

Estimating the capital needed to maintain the business is often the most difficult component. Different maintenance-spending assumptions can lead to substantially different owner earnings estimates.
