Contract Liability

Trading Term

A contract liability arises when a company receives payment before fulfilling its obligations to a customer. It commonly appears in subscription services, maintenance agreements, advance sales, and long-term service contracts.

The liability may provide visibility into future revenue, but it does not represent completed profit. The company must still provide the contracted products or services and incur the associated costs.
