ADP Employment Report

Trading Term

The ADP Employment Report is a monthly measure of private-sector employment in the United States, published by ADP (Automatic Data Processing) in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab. Released two days before the government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Employment Situation Report, it provides an early indication of trends in hiring and workforce dynamics across various industries, excluding government jobs.

The report is based on anonymized payroll data from ADP’s vast client network and covers millions of workers. It breaks down employment gains or losses by business size and sector, helping analysts and investors forecast the official BLS jobs report. For example, if the ADP report shows stronger-than-expected job gains in construction or services, markets may anticipate broader economic strength and potential action by the Federal Reserve.

While useful, the ADP report does not always align closely with the BLS figures, due to differences in methodology and sample scope. Still, it plays an important role in shaping market expectations, interest rate forecasts, and short-term market movements, particularly in volatile economic periods or ahead of major Fed decisions.
