November marks the annual publication of our thematic compendium, now in its twelfth edition. Grab your copy (ask us if you’d like a paper version), put your feet up and discover how these themes have the power to capture the imagination, stimulate debate and drive our investment process. To whet the appetite, below follow our 12 favourite pieces of thematic trivia from this year’s edition.
The average Gen-Z citizen spends 109 days a year looking at their screen. We are being deluged by data, The amount of data produced and consumed is showing absolutely no signs of slowing – and that’s before we even consider AI.
90% of all data is expected to require a meaningful level of security, but less than half of it will be secured. Data have zero value unless they are secured. Cyber spend is therefore heading only one way.
$2tr will be spent on expanding data centre capacity globally by the end of this decade. Good news for many players in the construction industry.
The equivalent of three New York Cities of power demand will need to be added to the US grid by 2030 to meet growing data centre requirements. Complicating matters, over 70% of grid equipment in the US is more than 25 years old.
More than 9 in 10 renewable power projects commissioned in the past year were less expensive than their fossil fuel equivalent. Much of the energy required to power AI will continue to come from solar.
‘Artificial intelligence engineer’ is the fastest growing job role in the US. No surprise perhaps, as businesses are beginning to appreciate just how much proprietary data sets may matter.
650m humanoid robots could be operational by 2030. They won’t work as AI engineers (just yet), but they will increasingly take on roles in factories and elder care.
A surgery is performed with robotic assistance roughly every 20 seconds. However, this accounts for fewer than 10% of all surgeries conducted globally. Given the clear benefits, expect these robots to grow in ubiquity.
Over 50% of the world’s population are managing chronic health issues. Improved access to existing (weight loss) drugs and faster new drug innovation (via AI) can help address this challenge.
Autonomous vehicles have driven over 33m miles cumulatively without human intervention and have had 78% fewer injury-causing crashes compared with a human driver over the same distance. Your author was highly impressed by the autonomous experience when visiting California. Waymo comes to London in 2026.
There are 670m single people in the world (excluding China). The online dating category represents one of the best use-cases for AI algorithms to drive happier outcomes.
Over 30% of the world’s population lacks reliable internet access. Connecting the unconnected (via low earth orbiting satellites) could be the most important future trend, driving even greater data demand.
