Catch up on the top industries and stocks that were impacted, or were predicted to be impacted, by the comments, actions and policies of President Donald Trump with this daily recap compiled by The Fly.
President Trump said on social media, “Numerous European Countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax on American Companies. Some of these Countries are close to actually doing this. Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America. This TARIFF will supersede Trade Deals made with the Country, whether implemented, signed, or not. Additionally, the 100% TARIFF will be immediately imposed, if they proceed. Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Apple (AAPL) is lobbying the Trump administration, hoping to receive clearance to purchase memory chips from CXMT, a Chinese company currently blacklisted by the Pentagon due to its alleged connections to the People’s Liberation Army, Demetri Sevastopulo and Michael Acton of The Financial Times reported, citing six people familiar with the matter.
U.S. Central Command said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “U.S. Central Command forces conducted strikes against Iran, June 26, as a powerful response to yesterday’s attack on a commercial ship that was transiting the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. aircraft struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites after Iran hit M/V Ever Lovely on June 25 with a one-way attack drone. The Singapore-flagged cargo ship was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast at the time of Iran’s attack. The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire. Furthermore, Iran’s dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor. CENTCOM forces continue to provide safe passage coordination and support to commercial vessels transiting the strait. The U.S. military remains present and vigilant to ensure all aspects of the agreement with Iran are adhered to, obeyed, and in full force and effect.”
Anthropic has won U.S. approval to restore some access to its Mythos 5 AI model, Josh Wingrove and Rachel Metz of Bloomberg report. “Anthropic has worked with the US government to address risks associated with the Covered Models,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote, according to a letter seen by Bloomberg News. “These efforts have yielded significant progress,” he wrote, saying that the model could be released to “certain trusted partners.”
For years, the Justice Department investigated Abbott Laboratories’ (ABT) baby formula facility, where potentially deadly bacteria was found and suspected of causing infant deaths, Dave Michaels, Sadie Gurman, and Liz Essley Whyte of The Wall Street Journal report. Prosecutors believed there was evidence to criminally charge Abbott under a law used to pursue other businesses for contaminated food and some supervisors believed what they had was a good case, people familiar with the matter told the Journal. Top decision makers, however, closed the probe and instead focused on regaining the money the company earned from selling the formula through federally funded nutrition programs, the sources added.
