Robots? Yes please!

Imagine never having to load the dishwasher again. Folding laundry is boring too. Robots could soon be performing these tasks. Humanoid robots have the potential to transform both domestic and industrial settings. Improved capabilities combined with falling costs mean that we may soon have them helping around the houses with chores.

Since we wrote about humanoids a year ago, the cost of humanoids has probably fallen by at least 20%, based on historical precedents and anecdotal evidence. Wage inflation, by contrast, is running at 3.5%. Humans get sick, take days off and may be susceptible to job offers. Robots suffer from none of these quirks, at least not yet. Elon Musk – admittedly someone not afraid of making bold claims – believes humanoid robots could retail for $30,000 in the near future. Some quick maths gets you to an impressively short payback period, relative to the cost of employing a human that might perform similar tasks.

Sceptics worry about two main things: whether robots are truly capable of displacing humans and what happens to the displaced humans. Begin with their capabilities. Today’s humanoids are the most expensive and least capable that they will ever be. Watch any recent video and it should be obvious how much their dexterity and autonomy have improved relative to a year earlier. The rate of change in object manipulation and successful task execution has been particularly impressive.

Humanoids are much more likely to disrupt tasks rather than jobs. Studies suggest that net job losses from technological deployments tend to be no more than 1%. The biggest barrier to adoption, in our view, is misperception around the sentience of humanoids and their capabilities. Be clear what they can and cannot do at the outset to minimise potential disappointment. Your author has yet to purchase his own a robotic helpmate, but watch this space…
