Tangible Common Equity Ratio

Trading Term

The tangible common equity ratio compares tangible common equity with tangible assets. It removes goodwill, other intangible assets, and preferred equity to focus on capital available to common shareholders.

The ratio is often applied to banks and other financial institutions as an indicator of loss-absorbing capacity. It should be considered alongside asset quality because capital levels do not reveal the likelihood of future losses.
