Core Earnings

Trading Term

Core earnings attempt to measure the profit generated by a company’s primary, ongoing activities. Analysts generally remove unusual, nonrecurring, or peripheral gains and expenses from reported net income.

There is no universally standardized definition of core earnings. Investors should examine each adjustment and determine whether expenses described as nonrecurring are actually part of normal business operations.
