Maintenance Capital Expenditure

Trading Term

Maintenance capital expenditure represents spending needed to preserve a company’s current assets, operating capacity, and competitive position. It differs from growth expenditure, which is intended to expand the business.

Companies do not always disclose maintenance and growth spending separately. Underestimating maintenance requirements can overstate sustainable free cash flow and the cash potentially available to shareholders.
