Inventory Reserve

Trading Term

An inventory reserve is an accounting allowance for products that may be worth less than their recorded cost. Establishing the reserve lowers reported inventory and generally increases the associated expense.

Changes in reserve assumptions can affect gross margin and earnings. Investors may compare inventory growth, write-downs, sales trends, and reserve balances to identify possible changes in inventory quality.
