Economic Profit

Trading Term

Economic profit evaluates whether a business earns more than the return required by its capital providers. It is often calculated as after-tax operating profit minus a charge for the capital employed.

Positive economic profit suggests that the company is creating value beyond its financing costs. Negative economic profit indicates that accounting earnings may not adequately compensate investors for the capital and risk involved.
