{"id":175491,"date":"2020-08-27T19:16:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T23:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/trading-lessons\/stop-and-stop-limit-orders-for-mosaic\/"},"modified":"2023-12-19T09:36:22","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T14:36:22","slug":"stop-and-stop-limit-orders-for-mosaic","status":"publish","type":"trading-lessons","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/trading-lessons\/stop-and-stop-limit-orders-for-mosaic\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop and Stop Limit Orders for Mosaic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson, we\u2019ll walk you through how to set up a Stop and Stop Limit order using TWS Mosaic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019ll define the objective of the Stop and Stop Limit order type<\/li>\n<li>Show you how to create a Stop order in TWS Mosaic<\/li>\n<li>Show you where you can locate Stop orders within the Activity panel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>TWS Mosaic Stop and Stop Limit orders<\/p>\n<p>Typically, <strong>Stop orders<\/strong> help investors get out of an existing position. They are intended to either lock in profits or limit losses. Alternatively, a Stop order can be created to force you, the investor, into a fresh position when a specified price is reached. In this case, you have determined that you either want to go long if prices rise above a specific price or establish a new short position should prices fall below a specified threshold.<\/p>\n<p>For both Stop and Stop Limit orders, the determined stop price serves as a trigger, which will activate the order when penetrated. You should <strong>*note<\/strong>, however, that stop orders are not guaranteed to execute.<\/p>\n<p>So, what is the difference between the Stop and Stop Limit order types?<\/p>\n<p>For one, a Stop order becomes marketable and is intended to fill \u2013 regardless of price \u2013 once the determined trigger price is pierced.<\/p>\n<p>It does not have a specific execution price and may execute significantly away from its Stop price. In that regard, it is not possible to estimate the impact of executing away from the trigger, or Stop price, until the trade has filled.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Stop Limit order has the additional component of a limit price associated with the stop price trigger.<\/p>\n<p>While this added element eliminates the price risk associated with the Stop order, it introduces the risk that the order may not fill at all, and that the investor may \u2018miss the market\u2019 altogether.<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Creating a Stop order in TWS Mosaic<\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s see how we can create them in TWS.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll focus on the Stop Order first, and we\u2019ll use \u2013 for illustrative purposes \u2013 a stock ticker in my portfolio with an existing long position.<\/p>\n<p>Once we\u2019ve selected the stock, click on the Sell button. I see that my position in this stock is 100 shares \u2013 and I\u2019m going to choose to sell this amount from the Quantity field. Since I want this to be a Stop order, I\u2019m going to specify this using the Order Type dropdown. The menu selection for Stop here is STP. If you don\u2019t see it listed, click on the expand arrow at the bottom of the list.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2703 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ord30.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"491\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 960px; aspect-ratio: 960\/491;\">Now, I\u2019m selling 100 shares of my stock as a Stop Order \u2013 that much we\u2019ve established \u2013 but <strong>*remember<\/strong>, a Stop order becomes marketable and is intended to fill \u2013 regardless of price \u2013 once the determined trigger price is penetrated. So, we\u2019ll need to determine what that trigger price is.<\/p>\n<p>Since we\u2019re selling these shares, we\u2019ll want to set a price below the prevailing trading price of the security \u2013 this is the price at which you want the order to become active. <em>Let\u2019s enter that price in the Price Input field. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>When this price is reached, the system will automatically turn the order into a market order and sell until filled.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, you may want to consider how long you want the order to remain open for.<\/p>\n<p>If you leave Day order as the default, the system will cancel the order at the end of the daily session if not triggered; however, if you want, you can also change this setting to GTC, or \u2018good-till-cancelled,\u2019 from the time-in-force menu.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, let\u2019s review the order:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2018m selling 100 shares of my stock as a Stop order, with a set trigger price below the prevailing trading price, and I\u2019ve left the Day order in place. Since I\u2019m satisfied with these details, I\u2019ll go ahead and hit Submit. You\u2019ll see that an Order Preview is generated when I do this. I\u2019m just going to review everything again and am now ready to Transmit the order to the market.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2706 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ord31.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"490\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 960px; aspect-ratio: 960\/490;\">And once I transmit my order, I\u2019ll see it appear on the Orders tab in the Activity window.<\/p>\n<h4>Creating a Stop Limit order in TWS Mosaic<\/h4>\n<p>Now that we know how to create a Stop order in Mosaic \u2013 how about a Stop Limit order?<\/p>\n<p>For the Stop Limit order, you\u2019ll see that the basic order entry is the same, however this time you may want to close a position showing open profits or set a maximum loss on a losing trade.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go through some steps, we\u2019ll select a stock, click on the Sell button, and select the Position size from the Quantity input field.<\/p>\n<p>Now, when selecting from the Order Type dropdown menu, select the Limit version of the Stop order, which is displayed as STP LMT.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2709 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ord32.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"489\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 960px; aspect-ratio: 960\/489;\"><\/p>\n<p>The Order Entry panel now displays the additional input field for Limit as well as the Stop input field we saw in the previous example.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2711 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ord33.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"491\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 960px; aspect-ratio: 960\/491;\"><\/p>\n<p>Enter the price, below the prevailing trading price of the security, at which you want the order to become active. If reached, your stop order becomes an order to sell.<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than becoming a market order, you may enter a Limit price below which the order will not execute. In the Limit field, enter this value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Remember<\/strong> to change the time-in-force selection if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Once I review the details and am satisfied, I\u2019ll go ahead and submit the order. TWS will follow with an Order Confirmation, and I\u2019ll ensure here that all the details of my order are as they should be \u2013 and if they are, I\u2019ll transmit it.<\/p>\n<h4>Locating Stop orders within the Activity panel<\/h4>\n<p>Just like we saw with the Stop order, you will see this Stop Limit order appear in the Activity panel below.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, you do not have to have an open position to use Stop or Stop Limit orders, you may establish fresh long positions using a Buy Stop or new short positions using Sell Stop or Stop Limit orders.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know how to create a Stop and Stop Limit order in Mosaic, let\u2019s turn our attention to the next lesson on order types in Traders\u2019 Academy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stop orders may help investors protect profits and cut losses.
