{"id":175489,"date":"2020-08-27T19:15:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T23:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/trading-lessons\/tws-relative-or-pegged-to-primary-order-type\/"},"modified":"2023-12-19T09:36:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-19T14:36:09","slug":"tws-relative-or-pegged-to-primary-order-type","status":"publish","type":"trading-lessons","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/trading-lessons\/tws-relative-or-pegged-to-primary-order-type\/","title":{"rendered":"TWS Relative or Pegged-to-Primary Order Type"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Relative or Pegged-to-Primary Order Type<\/h2>\n<p>In this lesson, we\u2019ll walk you through how to set up a Relative or Pegged-to-Primary order using TWS Mosaic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019ll define the objective of the Relative order type<\/li>\n<li>Show you how to create a Relative order in TWS Mosaic<\/li>\n<li>Show you where you can locate this order within the Activity panel<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>TWS Mosaic Relative or Pegged-to-Primary order<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Relative order type<\/strong> allows traders to seek a more aggressive price than the National Best Bid and Offer (the NBBO), without showing their hand to the market, by using an offset amount.<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, this order type&nbsp;increases the odds of filling an order.<\/p>\n<p>Entering a Relative order may help traders in higher priced stocks where the bid\/ask spread is wider, or in less liquid markets, where bids and offers are thin, while quotes are automatically adjusted as the markets move, to remain aggressive.<\/p>\n<h4>Creating a Relative order in TWS Mosaic \u2013 Buy order<\/h4>\n<p>Let\u2019s now look at how to set up a Relative order using Mosaic:<\/p>\n<p>Select a ticker to populate the Order Entry panel, then click on Buy, which \u2013 as you can see \u2013 turns the background to blue.<\/p>\n<p>Now use the Quantity field to select the number of shares you want to purchase.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve completed this, select REL, which represents the Relative order type, from the Order Type dropdown menu \u2013 <strong>*notice<\/strong> that when you do this, an additional offset input field populates.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2445 lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ord28.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"490\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 960px; aspect-ratio: 960\/490;\"><\/p>\n<p>Before we enter a value there, let\u2019s first set a limit price to an amount above which we do not want the order to execute.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look now at the current spread between the bid and ask prices and revisit that offset input field we mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s now enter a value of five-cents in this field.<\/p>\n<p>This means that my order to buy will be pegged to the NBB as it moves plus the five-cent value of the offset, which makes it more aggressive than the market, so more likely to fill.<\/p>\n<p>Should the market fall away, this order will remain pegged to the bid and may fall.<\/p>\n<p>But should the market increase, so too will my bid price, but exceeding the value of competing bids by the five-cent offset.<\/p>\n<p>However, the order will not execute above the chosen limit price should the share price rise above it.<\/p>\n<p>Click Submit when you\u2019re ready to generate an Order Confirmation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Note<\/strong> that the Relative order shown on the confirmation also indicates the value of your stated offset amount.<\/p>\n<p>Locating orders within the Activity panel<\/p>\n<p>Now click Transmit to send the order to the exchange and check the Activity panel and Orders tab to see the live working order as it fills.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2446 size-full lazyload\" title=\"half\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/11\/ord29.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"585\" height=\"128\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 585px; aspect-ratio: 585\/128;\"><\/p>\n<h4>Relative order \u2013 Sell order<\/h4>\n<p>OK &#8211; let\u2019s now repeat the process for a Sell order.<\/p>\n<p>Populate the Order Entry panel with a ticker and select Sell, which will turn the background to red, then enter the number of shares you want to sell.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll again select REL from the Order Type dropdown menu, and noting the current bid\/ask prices above, we\u2019ll decide on a limit price below the live quote so that the order will stop executing should the bid price fall beneath that level.<\/p>\n<p>The sell order is pegged to the NBO. But in this case, I will enter an offset of 2-cents, meaning my order will be two cents more aggressive than the best available offer in the market.<\/p>\n<p>If the market moves down, my offer goes with it.<\/p>\n<p>If the market moves up, my offer will move, but appear more attractive than the NBBO by the value of the offset.<\/p>\n<p>If the share price falls below my stated limit price, my order will stop executing until the price returns to the limit.<\/p>\n<p>However, if prices remain below the limit, no more shares will execute.<\/p>\n<p>Click Submit when you\u2019re ready to generate an Order Confirmation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Note<\/strong> the Relative order shown on the confirmation also indicates the value of your stated offset amount.<\/p>\n<p>Now click Transmit and check the Activity panel and Orders tab to see the live working order as it fills.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know how to create Relative orders in Mosaic, let\u2019s turn our attention in the next lesson on order types in Traders\u2019 Academy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Relative order type enables investors to use an offset amount to make their orders more aggressive than the prevailing NBBO in the market.
