{"id":175318,"date":"2020-08-26T16:29:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-26T20:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/trading-lessons\/tws-chart-trendlines-2\/"},"modified":"2026-06-08T16:00:58","modified_gmt":"2026-06-08T20:00:58","slug":"tws-chart-trendlines-2","status":"publish","type":"trading-lessons","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/trading-lessons\/tws-chart-trendlines-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding Trendlines to TWS Charts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button has-custom-width wp-block-button__width-50\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/ndcdyn.interactivebrokers.com\/mkt\/?src=taCHTIntroAcc&amp;url=%2FUniversal%2FApplication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Account<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\nFor those of you who typically add so-called trendlines to help make buy and sell decisions:\n<ul>\n \t<li>This lesson will show you how to add support and resistance lines to TWS charts;<\/li>\n \t<li>Show you how to reposition and remove lines from the chart area; as well as<\/li>\n \t<li>Demonstrate how to add Fibonacci lines to charts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2710 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Annotations.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"904\" height=\"540\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 904px; aspect-ratio: 904\/540;\">\n<h3>Annotations<\/h3>\nAs with many features of TWS charts, there is more than one way to achieve the same outcome with our tools.\n\nFor example, while you can use the <strong>Edit<\/strong> dropdown menu to access the Annotation menu, with which you can add horizontal, vertical and regular trendlines, as well as Fibonacci lines, you can also bypass this process just by clicking on the chart.\n\nAfter you right-click and select \u2018edit chart\u2019 to add a horizontal or vertical trendline, your desired line will be displayed, which you may reposition anywhere on the chart.\n\nSimply by clicking, you\u2019ll see the price value associated with the cursor displayed in the center of the line, which you can use as your guide for where you decide to release it \u2013 as a line of support or resistance.\n\nYou may want to remove or position this line or create another line parallel to this one.\n\nTo access the trendline edit mode, hover your cursor above the line \u2013 it will change color, and the cursor will also change to a pointing finger, signaling that, by left-clicking, you can drag the line elsewhere on the chart.\n\nIf you <strong>right-click<\/strong>, the edit menu will appear, where you can change line thickness or color, remove annotations, or remove the line or associated horizontal lines. You can even use the existing line to set an Alert.\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"half aligncenter wp-image-2714 size-medium lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Right-Click-Edit-Menu.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"540\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 498px; aspect-ratio: 498\/540;\">\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in .25in .0001pt 0in;\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Overall, right-clicking allows you to edit the chart and add a horizontal line. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in .25in .0001pt 0in;\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"vertical-align: baseline; margin: 0in .25in .0001pt 0in;\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Hover above the line and right-click again to open the edit function and you can add or reposition lines. Adding a parallel line to any trendline enables you to create a channel, often watched by traders as a path of support and resistance.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2717 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Edit-Function.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"540\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 722px; aspect-ratio: 722\/540;\">\n\nI will now activate one of these lines and select Remove All Annotations to clear the display of lines.\n\nIn order to add an upward sloping line beneath an asset\u2019s price, I\u2019ll position the cursor at the base of the bar, marking the start of the price climb, then I\u2019ll left-click to turn the cursor into a crosshair; now I\u2019ll drag the cursor to the end point and release the left-button to place the line.\n\nLet\u2019s <strong>activate<\/strong> this line by hovering above it, right-click to Add a parallel.\n\nThen, reposition the additional line with your cursor to create a parallel channel.\n\nFor greater accuracy when adding lines, you may want to create an <strong>additional margin<\/strong> to the right of the chart.\n\nTo do this, hover your cursor above the small left-pointing arrow to the lower right of the chart.\n\nIt will change color as you hover directly above it.\n\nClick left and drag to the left to create more space.\n\nThis will allow you to extend the trendline out into the future.\n\nIf you don\u2019t see the arrow, you must <strong>enable<\/strong> Margin Area from the Settings Menu in <strong>Global Configuration<\/strong>. As a reminder, Global Configuration may be opened by clicking the TWS File menu.\n<h3>Fibonacci lines<\/h3>\nLet\u2019s now create a series of Fibonacci lines to a chart.\n\nTechnical analysts use such retracement measurements to project areas of support and resistance, once an up or downtrend is thought to have concluded.\n\nTo add this indicator, right-click anywhere on the chart and select Add Fibonacci Line.\n\nYou can see that the cursor image has changed.\n\nIf you are trying to measure a recent <strong>uptrend<\/strong>, position the cursor at the bar at the <strong>bottom <\/strong>of the uptrend, and hold the left mouse button down.\n\nWith the left click depressed, move the cursor to the top of the range and release the left click button.\n\nThe chart will populate with retracement levels using zero as the starting point and 100% as the top of the range.\n\nYou will see the popular retracements displayed on the chart, which are commonly thought to offer support and resistance.\n\nTo remove Fibonacci lines, right click and select Remove All Trendlines.\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2725 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/Fibonacci-Lines.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"929\" height=\"540\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 929px; aspect-ratio: 929\/540;\">\n\nTo dissect a <strong>downtrend<\/strong>, select Add Fibonacci line from the right-click menu, but this time start at the highest point on the chart, use the left click to anchor to the peak and hold the mouse key down and locate the bottom of the price action before releasing.\n\nThe chart will then display Fibonacci lines to depict potential retracement areas.\n\nNow that you are familiar with adding trendlines of support and resistance to your TWS charts, let\u2019s move on to the next charting lesson in Traders\u2019 Academy.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lines of support and resistance are vital to many chart traders.
