{"id":80901,"date":"2021-03-23T11:05:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-23T15:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=80901"},"modified":"2023-02-10T13:33:15","modified_gmt":"2023-02-10T18:33:15","slug":"pennies-from-heaven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/pennies-from-heaven\/","title":{"rendered":"Pennies From Heaven"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major news sources have begun reporting what many investors have already discovered&nbsp; &#8211; that volumes in \u201cpenny stocks\u201d have exploded.&nbsp; While most of the media\u2019s attention is focused upon highly capitalized household names, there is an entire investing ecosystem that is thriving with only a minimum of scrutiny.&nbsp; There are many worrisome signs surrounding OTC stocks, and it\u2019s not just that the volume has exploded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SEC actually defines a penny stock primarily by what it is not (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/cfr\/text\/17\/240.3a51-1\">exact definition here<\/a>), but its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/investor\/schedule15g.htm\">required disclosure broadly defines penny stocks<\/a> as \u201clow-priced shares of small companies\u201d that \u201cgenerally trade over-the-counter\u201d.&nbsp; The over-the-counter market (OTC) is often called the \u201cpink sheets\u201d, because brokers would historically look for the dealers in these stocks in books printed on pink pages.&nbsp; The name persists even though the quotes have long since been distributed electronically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The table below is the publicly available data on OTC stocks, distributed by FINRA.&nbsp; I encourage you to <a href=\"https:\/\/otce.finra.org\/otce\/marketStatistics\">open the link<\/a> in a separate tab for greater readability.&nbsp; Pay special attention to the columns entitled \u201cTot. Shares Vol.\u201d and \u201cAvg. Dollar Vol.\/Share ($)&#8221;:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-finra-equity-trading-data-for-all-otc-stocks\"><em>FINRA Equity Trading Data for All OTC class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statistics in those columns are quite revealing.&nbsp; The series that got the most attention is the Total Shares Volume.&nbsp; OTC share volumes are up about 22x \u2013 yes twenty-two times \u2013 over the past 12 months!&nbsp; Volumes went up over 3x in December and nearly doubled again by February.&nbsp; This staggering, exponential growth is what got the major media attention.&nbsp; I graphed the volumes in Excel to show how the solid pace of growth became truly extreme since November:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the average price of a traded OTC share has plummeted steadily.&nbsp; The share price graph below is not nearly as dramatic as its counterpart above, but that is mainly because the price has become asymptotic to zero, as opposed to the parabolic rise in volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dichotomy is largely resolved in a graph of the total dollar volume.&nbsp; That figure actually fell throughout much of the past year, only rebounding above year-ago levels in January:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"887\" height=\"448\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-126.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-80910 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-126.png 887w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-126-700x354.png 700w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-126-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-126-768x388.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The last graph tells an interesting story about how such huge share volumes can go largely unnoticed.&nbsp; I found the statistics for average daily trading in Tesla (TSLA) for the month of February.&nbsp; The average dollar volume traded on a given day in TSLA was about $22 billion.&nbsp; In other words, the total dollar volume for an entire record month on the OTC exchanges was equivalent to about 4 days\u2019 worth of dollar volume in just one highly capitalized popular stock that is popular with individual and institutional traders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, at the same time that share volumes have been increasing exponentially, the average price of the shares has fallen steadily.&nbsp; That means that much of the volume explosion is in the lowest quality stocks.&nbsp; Also, after a brief bump, the average dollar volume of each trade has contracted to about $3,000.&nbsp; Again, this is a sign that more investors are taking small bets on the most beaten down names.&nbsp; Taken together, these are signs of true froth in the penny stock world.&nbsp; That is not unexpected, considering the number of new investors that have entered the market and their use of social media for information.&nbsp; Bull markets with high participation by retail investors have historically brought increases in penny stock volumes.&nbsp; It\u2019s hard to resist what appears to be a lottery ticket.&nbsp; Unfortunately, scammers, promoters and pump-and-dump artists know this too \u2013 meaning it often ends badly for those who join the game at this point.&nbsp; Hopefully forewarned is forearmed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Major news sources have begun reporting what many
