How to Position for a Rally."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For all of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/INTC\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Intel<\/a>\u2019s&nbsp;incredible contributions to computing, the stock is poised to end the year about where it began\u2014but in a worse place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intel (ticker: INTC) is now viewed by many investors as having fallen behind rivals, and it draws unfavorable comparisons to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/AMD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Micro Devices<\/a>&nbsp;(AMD) and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/NVDA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nvidia<\/a>&nbsp;(NVDA).&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/AAPL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple<\/a>&nbsp;(AAPL), which has long used Intel chips in its computers, recently announced that three of its new computers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/apple-unveils-first-macs-powered-by-new-m1-chip-51605036158?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would use Apple-designed chips<\/a>, a move that seems symbolic of Intel\u2019s decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making matters worse, the stock\u2014now trading at $47.05\u2014is likely to soon come under end-of-year tax-selling pressure. Investors should note that a window is soon closing that can be used to lower its cost basis and even change its risk dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without doubt, Intel remains deep in the wilderness. It recently reported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/intel-reported-earnings-thursday-heres-why-the-stock-is-plunging-51603475045?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">underwhelming in-line third-quarter results<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tipranks.com\/analysts\/rick-schafer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rick Schafer<\/a>, an Oppenheimer analyst, essentially told his clients that they should not expect much from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMultiple structural challenges keep us sidelined,\u201d he wrote in a research note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the start of the year, the mood wasn\u2019t so bleak. In January, the company reported&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/intel-stock-soars-on-earnings-and-strong-cloud-sales-51579816107?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strong fourth-quarter earnings<\/a>&nbsp;of $1.52 per share, which exceeded the $1.25 consensus estimate. Revenue of $20.2 billion beat expectations by $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Deutsche Bank analyst reiterated a $72 price target and said that Intel\u2019s guidance, which was cautious at the time, might be too conservative. Other analysts were more nuanced, but most investors focus on bright, shiny news more than on risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intel was once one of the most exciting companies anywhere. The company\u2019s chips were seemingly in every device that was changing how we interact with the world. But that was a long time ago. Intel\u2019s stock performance tells the rest of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some ways, the saga is reminiscent of what was once said about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/quote\/MSFT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft<\/a>&nbsp;(MSFT) before new CEO&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/satya-nadella-has-been-preparing-microsoft-a-moment-like-this-for-years-51593221335?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Satya Nadella<\/a>&nbsp;remade the company. Few could imagine it was possible to turn around such a large, complex organization, but it was remade, and the stock has thrived ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, new eyes\u2014and a significant adjustment to the company\u2019s decades-long manufacturing strategy for its most advanced chips\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/intel-has-lost-ground-to-amd-and-nvidia-and-apple-ditched-its-chips-why-its-stock-can-rise-anyway-51605317412?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could reinvigorate Intel<\/a>. Regardless, the stock pays a healthy dividend and is far cheaper than its rivals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the past 52 weeks, Intel stock has ranged from $43.61 to $69.29. The peak was realized early in the year on the heels of the strong January earnings report and before the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything. Intel\u2019s stock is down 24% this year, and 22% over the previous 52 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is much to be said for selling a poorly performing stock and realizing a loss, but it\u2019s one of the hardest decisions investors face\u2014so they often don\u2019t face it. Most people are optimists who hate to lose money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is another way forward, the \u201cdouble up\u201d strategy that lets investors keep their stock and position for a rebound at more favorable prices. It entails buying the same amount of stock as one already owns, waiting 31 days, and then selling the original position that was bought at a higher price, thereby lowering the cost basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The holding period is critical. The wash-sale rule holds that you cannot sell a security and claim a tax loss if the position is replaced within 30 days. Nov. 30 is thus the last day in 2020 to use the strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/how-to-use-options-to-beat-the-market-1477415121?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a call option<\/a>&nbsp;to double up, an investor can risk less cash on what was a losing position while waiting for a rebound. (Calls give a holder the right to purchase a security at a set time and price.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Michael Schwartz, Oppenheimer\u2019s chief options strategist, has counseled clients who own Intel stock to double up with Intel\u2019s January $47.50 calls that expire in 2022. If the stock is at $70 at expiration, the calls are worth $22.50.
