{"id":30381,"date":"2020-01-07T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T13:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=30381"},"modified":"2022-11-21T09:44:52","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T14:44:52","slug":"python-function-tutorial-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/ibkr-quant-news\/python-function-tutorial-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Python Function Tutorial \u2013 Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>See <a href=\"\/campus\/ibkr-quant-news\/python-function-tutorial-part-i\/\">Part I<\/a> of this installment to learn more about Python functions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are three types of Python functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Built-in Python functions such as&nbsp;<code>print<\/code>&nbsp;to print on the standard output device,&nbsp;<code>type<\/code>&nbsp;to check data type of an object, etc. These are the functions that Python provides to accomplish common tasks.<\/li><li>User-Defined Python functions: As the name suggests these are custom functions to help\/resolve\/achieve a particular task.<\/li><li>Anonymous Python functions, also known as lambda functions are custom-made without having any name identifier.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Built-in Python functions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built-in functions are the ones provided by Python. We will go through a few of them now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><code>type(object)<\/code>&nbsp;is used to check the data type of an&nbsp;<em>object<\/em>.<\/li><li><code>float([value])<\/code>&nbsp;returns a floating point number constructed from a number or string&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>.<\/li><li><code>int([value])<\/code>&nbsp;returns an integer object constructed from a float or string&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>, or return 0 if no arguments are given.<\/li><li><code>round(number[, ndigits])<\/code>&nbsp;is used to round a float&nbsp;<em>number<\/em>&nbsp;up to digits specified by&nbsp;<em>ndigits<\/em>.<\/li><li><code>abs(value)<\/code>&nbsp;returns the absolute value of a&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>&nbsp;provided as an argument.<\/li><li><code>format(value[, format_spec])<\/code>&nbsp;converts a&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>&nbsp;to a &#8216;formatted&#8217; representation, as controlled by&nbsp;<em>format_spec<\/em>.<\/li><li><code>str([object])<\/code>&nbsp;returns a string version of&nbsp;<em>object<\/em>. If the object is not provided, returns the empty string.<\/li><li><code>bool([value])<\/code>&nbsp;return a Boolean value, i.e. one of&nbsp;<code>True<\/code>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<code>False<\/code>.&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>&nbsp;is converted using the standard truth testing procedure[1]. If the&nbsp;<em>value<\/em>&nbsp;is false or omitted, this returns&nbsp;<code>False<\/code>; otherwise, it returns&nbsp;<code>True<\/code>.<\/li><li><code>dir([object])<\/code>&nbsp;returns the list of names in the current local scope when an argument is not provided. With an argument, it attempts to return a list of valid attributes for that object.<\/li><li><code>len(object)<\/code>&nbsp;returns the length (the number of items) of an&nbsp;<em>object<\/em>. The argument may be a sequence (such as a string, bytes, tuple, list, or range) or a collection (such as a dictionary, set, or frozen set).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth noting that almost all built-in Python functions take one or more arguments, perform the specific operation on it and return the output. We will keep learning about many more built-in Python functions as we progress through our Python learning journey.
