{"id":260475,"date":"2026-11-03T10:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-11-03T15:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=260475"},"modified":"2026-11-03T11:20:40","modified_gmt":"2026-11-03T16:20:40","slug":"apple-brought-in-shiny-sales-but-higher-costs-ate-into-its-margins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/apple-brought-in-shiny-sales-but-higher-costs-ate-into-its-margins\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Brought In Shiny Sales, But Higher Costs Ate Into Its Margins"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With memory chip prices soaring, the tech firm\u2019s profit margins looked more lackluster than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-going-on-here\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s going on here?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Apple<\/strong> released its first set of results under a new CEO late on Monday \u2013 and while <a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/sales\">sales<\/a> beat expectations, rising memory chip costs bit into <a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/profit\">profit<\/a> margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The iconic tech firm\u2019s quarterly <a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/revenue\">revenue<\/a> rose 12% to $114.5 billion, ahead of the $113.4 billion expected. iPhone sales led the way, bringing in $57.6 billion and topping forecasts \u2013 even though the quarter included just eight days of iPhone 18 Pro sales. Apple\u2019s services revenue grew 10%, in line with expectations. But sales in China fell short, despite jumping more than 20%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25b6 The overall weak spot was profitability. Apple kept about 48 cents of every dollar it brought in after paying to make its products, down from 50 cents the quarter before. That was still better than analysts expected, but it highlights the growing cost of memory chips\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-should-i-care\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/experts\/theodora-lee-joseph\"><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>For markets:<\/strong><\/em> <em>Special snowflake \u2013 for now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smartphone shipments across the industry fell by a record 22% last quarter. With AI data centers gobbling up memory chips, component costs have skyrocketed, forcing many phonemakers to raise prices. But Apple\u2019s shipments dropped just 4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25b6 At a baseline, the tech giant\u2019s already high prices give it more room to swallow rising component costs. That said, even Apple has started to pass those costs on to customers: this September, it raised iPhone prices by $100. The firm\u2019s customers are notoriously loyal \u2013 but if things keep going up, they might not stay that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>The bigger picture:<\/strong><\/em> <em>Think different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple\u2019s shares trade at around 36 times next year\u2019s expected earnings, almost double the S&amp;P 500\u2019s multiple. That premium reflects its stability \u2013 and its appeal to investors wary of soaring AI spending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u25b6 While rivals have poured hundreds of billions into AI infrastructure, Apple\u2019s spent a fraction of that. If AI <a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/revenue\">revenue<\/a> disappoints, the firm\u2019s restraint looks wise. But if those bets pay off, investors could start rewarding the spenders instead\u2026 and Apple\u2019s valuation could shrink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
