{"id":259288,"date":"2026-10-19T10:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-19T14:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=259288"},"modified":"2026-10-19T11:06:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T15:06:10","slug":"weekly-market-recap-week-of-october-19-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/weekly-market-recap-week-of-october-19-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Market Recap: Week of October 19, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-week-in-review\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The week in review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Headline and core CPI rose 3.7%\/2.6% y\/y<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PPI rose 6.3% y\/y<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing-home sales in U.S. rose 1.5% m\/m<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-week-ahead\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The week ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Housing starts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PMIs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-thought-of-the-week\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thought of the Week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Third-quarter earnings are expected to deliver another impressive headline, with S&amp;P 500 aggregate net income growing 35% from a year ago, nearly three times its 10-year average. However, beneath the surface, the pace of growth varies considerably across the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As this week\u2019s chart shows, earnings are expected to grow 13% after excluding the Technology and Energy sectors and three AI-related companies: Amazon in Consumer Discretionary and Alphabet and Meta in Communication Services. While that is well above the 8% average of the past decade, the widening gap highlights where the acceleration is coming from. Together, the excluded sectors and companies are expected to contribute nearly 77% of the increase in S&amp;P 500 earnings this quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slower does not mean weak. In fact, analysts became more optimistic as the quarter progressed. Third-quarter earnings estimates increased 1.4% between June and September, compared with an average decline of more than 2% in a typical quarter. A record 72 companies also entered reporting season with guidance above consensus, suggesting the optimism is coming from companies as well as analysts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For investors, the distinction between breadth and acceleration is important. Earnings growth has broadened well beyond a handful of companies, providing a healthier foundation for the market. However, the acceleration in profits remains concentrated in areas benefiting most from the AI investment cycle and stronger energy earnings.
